Once you have submitted the online form for your UK tourist visa, there is one step you must complete in person: the appointment at a visa application centre. Here, you prove your identity with your passport, give your fingerprints and photograph, and submit your documents. It is not an interview.

This guide explains how the appointment works from booking to the day itself, and what happens afterwards.

Checked against official UK visa guidance on 26 October 2026. Centre procedures can change; always read the instructions in your appointment confirmation.

What Is the UK Visa Biometrics Appointment?

Biometric information means your fingerprints and a digital photograph. At the appointment, you:

  • Prove your identity with your passport
  • Have your fingerprints and photo taken
  • Provide the documents that support your application
  • Sign a copy of your application form to confirm the information is correct

In India, UK visa application centres are run by VFS Global, a commercial partner of the UK government. Centre staff collect your biometrics and documents. They do not decide your visa.

Before the Appointment

How to Book a UK Visa Appointment in India

After you submit the online form and pay the fee, you are given a link to the visa application centre's website to book your appointment. Choose the city and date that suit you. Most visa application centres offer free appointments within 5 working days, though availability can vary by city and season.

If you have not filled the form yet, see our UK visa application form guide.

The 240-Day Rule

You must attend your appointment within 240 days of submitting your application online. If you do not, you will need to start a new application.

Upload Documents or Get Them Scanned?

Depending on the centre, you can either upload your supporting documents yourself before the appointment, or have staff scan them at the centre, which may cost extra. Uploading in advance is usually quicker. Use clear images of original documents. See the UK tourist visa documents checklist.

What to Carry

  • Current passport
  • Appointment confirmation
  • Your supporting documents, if they are not already uploaded (originals as instructed)
  • For children: birth certificate and parents' consent, where applicable

Read the instructions in your appointment confirmation. Centres may ask you to carry specific printouts.

On the Appointment Day: What Happens at the UK Visa Application Centre

Arrival and security check. Arrive a little before your time slot and go through the security check. Keep your passport and appointment confirmation ready.

Document check. Staff check your passport and appointment details. If your documents are being scanned at the centre, they are collected and scanned now.

Fingerprints and photograph. All ten fingerprints are scanned digitally and your photo is taken. You do not need to bring a printed photograph. Avoid henna or mehendi on your fingertips, as it can affect the scan.

Signing the application. You sign a copy of your application form to confirm that the information is correct.

Passport returned. You get your passport back on the same day. The centre will tell you if it needs to keep any other documents.

Standard Appointment vs Premium Services

Biometrics and documentsYesYes
CostUsually includedExtra charge
Examples-Premium centres or lounges, document scanning help, out-of-hours slots, courier
Effect on visa decisionNoneNone

Paying for optional services does not make an application more likely to succeed, and VFS Global has said its premium centres in India have no bearing on the outcome. Choose them only for convenience. Fee guide: UK visa fees for Indians.

After the Appointment

  1. Decision: usually within 3 weeks of your appointment for standard service. See UK visa processing time in India.
  2. Email: you receive an email when a decision is made.
  3. eVisa: if approved, you access your eVisa through a UKVI account linked to your passport. See our UK eVisa update.

Do not book travel until you receive a decision.

  • Booking flights before the visa decision
  • Henna on the fingertips on appointment day
